Gun Milan, also known as Ashtakoot Milan or Kundali Milan, is the traditional North Indian system for matching horoscopes for marriage. "Ashta" means 8 and "Koota" means category. It analyzes 8 different aspects of compatibility between two individuals based on their Moon Nakshatras.

Varna represents the spiritual development level of the individual. There are 4 Varnas: Brahmin (highest), Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra. The groom's Varna should be equal to or higher than the bride's.

Gana represents the temperament and nature of the individual. There are 3 Ganas: Deva (Divine/Godly), Manushya (Human), and Rakshasa (Demonic). Same Gana is best, Deva-Manushya is acceptable, Rakshasa with others causes friction.
